Ich bin ein Berliner...

Well, folks, this post is a long time coming, but ta-da! Katie Bakes has gone international. How international? Well, I've picked up and moved to Berlin, Germany - land of kaffee und kuchen (fairly sacred afternoon cake and coffee time), strudel, and Kinder everything (chocolatey amazingness second really only to Nutella). Why you ask? Well, like many a formerly sensible girl, I moved away from friends and family for love. Forever, you say? No, not forever, but I'm committed to giving this place a shot for a few years, so... bring on the strudel!

But what about us, your faithful customers who made Katie Bakes a reality? Did I leave you in the cake dust? Nah! I thought this relocation might be a good opportunity for me to give the blogging a go, and make KatieBakes as much about sharing recipes and adventures in Euro-baking, as it has been about selling cakes in the past. I'll share what I'm up to, with recipes, and share the adventures of cooking in a stove that barely has a temperature knob (seriously, only, like, 4 randomly spaced temperature markings - in CELCIUS), and a fridge that might be smaller than the beer fridge we had in college.  Hopefully, you'll never experience baking equipment Siberia like this, but you can laugh at the foibles along the way, and get some new recipes to try out at as well. (Like, say, that time - the MANY times so far - when the oven is only big enough to cook one cake layer at a time, and then the oven just turns off at some point during baking, leaving a kinda sorta cooked pile of batter and a whole day gone)

So, this is to say, thank you for all your support during the DC chapter of Katie Bakes; I hope by sharing recipes and baking adventures in this next Chapter, you'll still eat well, and I'll get to stay in touch.

Tschuss, as they say over here!
Katie

And try not to be too jealous of my amazing new rolling pin!

Blogging! Here goes nothing!

Ok - a little late on this post, but vacation got in the way! Hoping to make chronicling my adventures in baking here a bit more regularly!

So, Lolo and Jed got married! And I had the honor and pleasure of fueling them up for their big day by making the desserts for their rehearsal dinner.  The desserts were themed around the couple - key lime cheesecakes in honor of where they first said 'I love you;' mini slider cupcakes as a nod to their weekly burger nights all summer long; Boston cream pie cupcakes for the die-hard Beantowner; oreo cheesecakes because, well, who doesn't love oreos, and a few chocolate covered Peeps in honor of the bride's love of artificial marshmallow treats. And, of course, a few chocolate 'stache cookies and chocolate and vanilla lip shaped cake pops for the photo booth! In future, I might think carefully before volunteering to do dessert for 60, 36 hours after a 30hr plane journey, but in this case, it was so much fun, and so worth it! Congrats, you two! Ober and out...
